The Avon Police Department served an arrest warrant to take George Legere into custody to face charged pending last month.
Legere was arrested as a fugitive by the Springfield, Massachusetts Police Department on May 19, 2021 and waived extradition to Connecticut. He is currently being charged with three counts of kidnapping in the first degree, stemming form a cold case from 1984.
On April 13, 1984, the Avon Police Department responded to the report of someone slumped over their steering wheel with the horn sounding. Once contact was made with the party, officers discovered the person has been abducted and sexually assaulted. Evidence, including DNA, was collected on scene and by medical personnel at the University of Connecticut Medical Center. Evidence was submitted to the State of Connecticut Forensic Sconce Laboratory, however, a suspect was not identified at the time.
The Avon Police Department was recently notified by the State of Connecticut, Division of Scientific Services of a match between DNA evidence collected on the morning of 4/12/84 and DNA that has entered into the National Offender DNA database. The offender was identified as Legere.
The Avon Police Department would like to acknowledge the diligent work done by officers and detectives who followed up on numerous lead and suspects in 1984. Their hard work resulted in the solving of this case 37 years later.
The Avon Police Department also wishes to acknowledge the hard work of the medical personnel at UConn Medica Center whose efforts, 37 years ago, helped preserve the DNA evidence.
In closing, the Avon Policer Department gratefully acknowledges the victim in this case, who despite having to constantly relieve this trauma, was fully supportive of our efforts to bring the case to conclusion.
