Detectives from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office arrested Geter Rhymes, Jr., in the 36-year-old cold case homicide of Roeland Park resident Gary Watson.
On March 13, 1985, 29-year-old Watson was found murdered in the apartment he shared with his wife and three young children. The case was initially a Metro Squad investigation where detectives from multiple law enforcement agencies in the Kansas City metropolitan area worked together to investigate the homicide. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office became the lead investigative agency on the case, which went cold over time.
In 2020, Sheriff’s Office Cold Case detectives and the crime lab revisited the case and re-examined evidence, developed new leads and conducted additional interviews.
The mission of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division is to give a voice to those who can no longer speak for themselves and give answers and sense of closure to the loved ones of every murder victim and missing person.
