On November 24, the County of Delaware, Pennsylvania discovered a disruption to portions of its computer network. They commenced an immediate investigation that included taking certain systems offline and working with computer forensic specialists to determine the nature and scope of the event.

On Wednesday, after working with computer forensic specialists over the holiday weekend, the county was able to restore critical systems and work toward strengthening the security of the network.

They determined the issues were caused by malware identified on certain systems that impacted ability to access certain files on servers and devices throughout the system.

“We commenced an immediate investigation into the issues to determine the full nature and scope of this incident and restore our network to full functionality. This investigation includes working with third-party forensic specialists to assist with these efforts and determine what company information or employee information may have been impacted,” the county said in an update.

The county said they will continue to update network security processes, and change passwords as needed.

“The confidentiality, privacy, and security of information in our care is one of our highest priorities. As part of our investigation, we are assessing impact on the integrity of data on our systems and will continue to work to evaluate the protections in place to protect that information,” they concluded.
