The Tulsa Police Department has issued a public service announcement concerning a new trend in drug mixtures that poses serious health risks. The Tulsa forensic laboratory has detected the presence of medetomidine, a powerful veterinary sedative, in fentanyl mixtures.
Signs of medetomidine toxicity Include:
- Sedation and impaired pain sensation
- Dry mouth and slowed breathing
- Hypnotic/anesthetic effects
- Dilated pupils and hypothermia
- Muscle twitching and slowed heart rate
- Initial high blood pressure, followed by dangerously low blood pressure
Medetomidine is NOT an opioid and will NOT respond to Naloxone (Narcan). While Naloxone should still be administered in the event of a suspected fentanyl overdose, it’s crucial to call emergency medical services immediately.
