Michael Garvey

Director of the Office of Forensic Science, Philadelphia Police Department (PPD)
Responsible for the accredited forensic laboratory, Director Garvey provides oversight to all PPD forensic operations, including maintaining national quality standards and advancing the City’s forensic capabilities. Director Garvey also serves as an advisor to the Philadelphia Police Department on issues related to homeland security and intelligence. Additionally, Director Garvey participates in numerous
national organizations, including Chairperson of the Major City Chiefs Association’s Forensic Science Committee, Board Member of the ATF’s National Crime Gun Intelligence Governing Board, FBI’s Rapid DNA Working group member, and IACP Forensic Science Committee member. Additionally, Director Garvey has academic experience as an adjunct professor in Biology and Forensic Science at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Temple University in the Fox School of Business and Beasley School of Law, and as an advisor for the Drexel University graduate program in Forensic Science. Prior to joining the Philadelphia Police Department, Director Garvey served the US Government for fifteen years in the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency. In these positions, he worked traditional criminal casework, counter-terrorism cases, and other intelligence operations around the globe.
