Commissioner Greg Hartmann called Hamilton County, Ohio's crime lab "a luxury item" in a speech attended by most of the county's top officials.

Coroner Lakshmi Sammarco, who runs the lab, took exception. Big time.

"A luxury? As in maybe his fancy cars that are maybe a luxury?" Sammarco said after the speech. "Name one person in this county that thinks public safety is a luxury item. Public safety is not a luxury.

Hartmann, a Republican, made the comment in response to a question after his "state of the county" address, during which he talked about the achievements of the past year and the challenges ahead. When a member of the audience asked why commissioners seem reluctant to move the crime lab to the old Mercy Hospital site in Mt. Airy, Hartmann said the problem is money.

He said the county does need a new lab, but the costs appear to be too high to build one or to renovate the hospital as a new home for the lab. Then he pointed out that coroners are not required by state law to run a crime lab, only the morgue.
