Corpses and Corpse Flowers: The Scent of DecompositionOver the years, Thurn’s research has focused on the chemical profile of human remains, and how this profile changes. The aim is to develop technology that can help locate victims of mass disasters. The FBI has approved changes to the Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic Laboratories to allow DNA evidence profiles generated by Rapid DNA analysis to be searched against CODIS. A reference DNA sample was collected from a possible relative and compared to the DNA profile of the unknown woman using KinSNP rapid relationship testing. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point opened its new Digital Forensics and Recovery Analysis Lab to provide students with hands-on experience and the opportunity to work on real-world cases. New guidelines encourage device manufacturers to include and enable standard logging and forensic features that are robust and secure by default.
