Expanded DNA Databases: Violation of Privacy or Crime Solving Tool?
As states and even the FBI expand their DNA databases by taking DNA samples not only from violent crime offenders, but from those convicted of minor crimes—and in some cases suspects upon arrest—the debate rages on the constitutionality of the practice. To what extent does increased crime fighting justify possible invasions of privacy? Is it reasonable to assume that petty criminals might move on to more violent crimes? Can an expanded database help solve cold cases and wrongful convictions?

  • Lawyer Says Faulty Forensics and False Testimony Led to Houston Man's Life Sentence
    Gary Alvin Richard was convicted largely on blood-typing evidence from the Houston Police Department crime lab, but new tests indicate that the report to the court was misleading. Crime lab analysts came to differing conclusions about the evidence, but only the results that pointed to Richard’s guilt were reported.

  • Texas House Approves Exoneree Compensation Bill
    The Texas House has approved a bill to increase compensation to wrongfully imprisoned people. The bill will increase monetary compensation from $50,000 per year of wrongful imprisonment to $80,000 and provides health insurance and education benefits to the recipients.

  • Juvenile Arrests and Violent Crimes Down in 2007
    The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention has released it’s summary of juvenile crime and arrest data reported by local law enforcement agencies across the country in 2007. The bulletin reported a 2% drop in juvenile arrests and 3% drop in juvenile violent crime arrests.
