  • Dollars to Lab a Wise Investment
    $1 million of federal stimulus money has been funneled into California’s crime labs. The money will go to Cal State Los Angeles, which oversees the 2-year-old, on-campus, joint LAPD-LASD crime lab through the California Forensic Science Institute.

    Laws in all 50 states require hospitals to collect a sample of every newborn baby’s blood. The primary purpose is to test for PKU and other diseases, but researchers and government agencies are realizing the value of such a databank of DNA. Some are calling for the creation of a national database.

  • DNA Evidence Storage Still an Issue
    Local law enforcement agencies in Mississippi say they lack both the space and expertise to store DNA evidence that a new state law requires them to preserve. Agencies hoped the Mississippi Crime Lab would preserve and store DNA evidence for them, but the lab doesn't have the capacity either.

  • Missouri Governor Signs DNA Bill
    After August 28, anyone arrested in Missouri for first- or second-degree burglary or a felony violent crime will have a DNA swab taken at booking. Previously DNA was only collected from those convicted.
