  • Separate Police and Labs to Reduce Bias
    The most controversial conclusion in the National Academy of Sciences report on forensic science was that crime labs need to be independent of law enforcement agencies because forensic scientists who work for police are prone to subtle, contextual bias, the Las Vegas Sun reports.

  • DNA Bill in Texas Risks Increasing DNA Backlog
    The ACLU is keeping a close eye on Sen. Dan Patrick’s SB 727, which if passed would require DNA from all Texans convicted of a felony, including juveniles and those on probation. In addition to privacy issues concerning the collection of DNA, the ACLU fears that the measure will increase the DNA backlog.

  • Judges Look to Shake Up DNA Appeals
    Harris County’s 22 criminal district judges recently approved a plan to regulate which lawyers can be assigned to cases for defendants seeking post-conviction DNA testing. By some accounts, Houston’s most recent inmate exonerated by DNA evidence spent an extra year in prison because of his attorney’s slow work.

  • Alabama To Revisit 100 Autopsies Performed by Discredited Medical Examiner
    A mother in Alabama was released after nine months in prison when several forensic pathologists said Alabama medical examiner Dr. Corinne Stern misdiagnosed her infant’s cause of death. The state’s chief medical examiner now plans to re-open 100 prior homicide cases in which Stern performed the autopsy.

  • California DA Dismisses Misdemeanor and Drug Charges in Exchange for DNA
    Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas is dismissing misdemeanor and drug charges against defendants in exchange for a DNA sample. Some judges and defense attorneys are concerned the program, dubbed "spit and acquit", may lead to abuses of power and public safety concerns.
