Texas Rangers Audit Austin Crime Lab

The Texas Rangers are now auditing the Austin Police Department forensic crime lab following a controversy that began when former DNA analyst wrote a lengthy memorandum to APD supervisors, as well as a city APD Human Resources manager, citing 40 issues she believed needed to be addressed.

Cecily Hamilton cited potential contamination of evidence and incompetent employees in the DNA lab. Hamilton specifically mentioned the Nathaniel Sanders case, an 18-year-old shot and killed by a then Austin police officer in May of 2009, saying the case was mishandled.

Following the Ranger’s audit, the United States Department of Justice is also expected to review the lab.
