A crime scene expert told jurors that the bloody footprints left in the Novi condominium where an elderly woman was stabbed and left to die matched those taken from suspect Peter Gerard Jones, a prison parolee with a violent past, who was arrested hours after the killing.

Jennifer Dillon, a forensic expert with the Michigan State Police, said the pattern on the soles of Jones’ athletic shoes showed a “very high degree” of similarity to numerous bloody footprints in the home of Bernice Schaufele, an 84-year-old grandmother who was found stabbed and bleeding to death by her daughter on January 13.

Under cross-examination by defense attorney Mitchell Ribitwer, Dillon said she could not confirm that they were the shoes, and could not say if Jones was wearing them that day. “You can’t tell who was wearing those shoes at the time of the homicide?” he asked. Dillon replied, “correct.”
