New Products from Puritan Medical Products, Forensics Source, Pyramidal Technologies, Cross Match, BrandTech

A look at the latest batch of forensic products, including DNA-free swabs, aerosol spray fingerprint powder, new ballistics technology, facial recognition SDK, and immunoassay plates.

Puritan Medical Products Offers DNA-Free Swabs
Puritan Medical Products Company LLC announced today the launch of a comprehensive new line of Human DNA and DNase Free sample collection devices. These products have all been certified as free of Human DNA contamination down to less than 25 pg, and also to be DNase free by Clean Earth Technologies of Winston-Salem, North Carolina (www.cleanearthtech.com). Copies of the testing certification documents are available.

Timothy Templet, Executive Vice President of Puritan, said “We are 100% committed to serving the forensic and diagnostic markets, and taking this step is a big part of that. These swabs have been certified as DNA-Free, and we purposely had this test conducted using a much lower DNA threshold level (less than 25 pg of Human DNA) than our competitors have done. So, when we say “DNA-Free” you can count on it.”

The lack of even trace amounts of Human DNA or DNase make this line of swabs ideal for collection and transfer of even the most minute amounts of DNA. Currently, the Puritan DNA-Free product line includes cotton tipped swabs, foam swabs, and nylon tipped flocked swabs, all manufactured in the United States.

Forensics Source Lightning Powder Now Available in an Aerosol Spray
Safariland announces that its Lightning Powder is now available in a convenient aerosol spray. Lightning Spray Aerosol Fingerprint Powder is the latest innovation in forensic latent fingerprinting technology, and is offered by Forensics Source, Safariland’s full range collection of forensics products.

Lightning Spray Powder provides a controlled, consistent application of powder to the suspected print area. There is less waste than the traditional method of using powder and brushes. The spray powder can also be applied to a wide variety of surfaces, including vertical and overhead areas where conventional dusting methods do not work. It is also the cleanest way to apply powder when used in conjunction with Lightning Spray’s proprietary disposable spray tents that limit powder residue to a confined area.

Lightning Spray Aerosol Fingerprint Powder is available in convenient two-ounce cans that contain up to 300 sprays. Current powder offerings include the most popular Lightning Powders in black, white, silver/gray, and RedWop.

“Until now, the only method available for fingerprinting was applying powder with a variety of brushes,” said Eric Schellhorn, Director, Category Marketing, Investigation & Examination. “This spray makes it much easier for law enforcement personnel to successfully and economically lift clean prints.”

Pyramidal Technologies Launches ALIAS—the Next Generation of Forensic Ballistics
Led by President and CEO Mike Barrett, the automated forensic ballistics pioneer who brought IBIS to firearms examiners and technicians in the early 90s, Pyramidal Technologies Ltd. announces the ALIAS Advanced Ballistics Analysis System.

"ALIAS is the next generation in forensic ballistics because it delivers an exponential increase in cartridge data available for analysis," stated Barrett, who was inspired to create ALIAS after attending an IBIS course in 2006 and realizing that there had been no significant advances in the field in 16 years.

ALIAS is a full 3D imaging, correlation, visualization and confirmation system that builds visually rich 3D cartridge images, and then provides powerful software tools to analyze them using topographically sensitive colorization, and adjustable light source and axis orientation.

ALIAS's 3D cartridge images offer resolution of 2 microns. ALIAS image data is captured by application-specific interferometer, and then processed with a 64-bit computing and application architecture that rapidly defines 3D data with patented algorithms and methodologies.

Cross Match Introduces Facial Recognition SDK
Cross Match Technologies, Inc., provider of biometric identity solutions, unveils the latest addition to its facial recognition product suite.

Cross Match delivers a comprehensive facial recognition suite, which includes:

  • Lookout Collector to rapidly capture facial images from video footage and surveillance tapes.
  • Lookout Matcher to reliably locate and extract facial images from video footage for watch list comparison.
  • Lookout Verify facial recognition SDK, which enables the real-time verification of ID photos.

“Lookout Verify extends Lookout Collector and Lookout Matcher to include machine readable travel document verification,” says Bill Dumont, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales at Cross Match. Lookout Verify compares facial images on electronic documents to the presenter’s face, as well as those stored in facial image databases.

Optimized for use in environments that require photo-based identity checks, Lookout Verify handles e-passports, PIV cards, and a wide range of other documents containing facial images.

Comprehensive Line of Immunoassay Plates
The new BRANDplates multiwell plate line features unique physical/chemical treatments for immunoassay. Three different surfaces—immunoGrade, hydroGrade, and lipoGrade provide high-binding, hydrophilic, and hydrophobic surfaces, respectively, to allow optimization of protein immobilization. Choose from a variety of well bottoms and colors in 96-, 384-, and 1536-well formats. These BRANDplates are suitable for a broad section of applications, including ELISA, RIA, and FIA.
